If the Encyclopaedists from the 18th century were looking for a comfortable bedfellow to room with in our era they would be hard put to find better than David Byrne. The Scottish-born American artist has put his mind to composing and recording music, of course, but also to making feature and documentary films, being an accomplished photographer, designing sonic journeys for museums, exhibiting visual art creations, composing film scores for an Oscar-winning film and writing four books. Yet, Byrne is best known as the co-founder and lead singer of the prototypical new wave punk band the Talking Heads and as the creator of the world music Luaka Bop label in 1988.
